Woulda, coulda, shoulda, oughta

Today I thought I would share with you a fairy tale that I wrote. One that I’m slowly working towards making a reality:

Once upon a time, there was a young woman named Megan. She lived in the land of “Woulda, Coulda, Shoulda”, which was right next to the land of “Oughta” and not too far from the land of “Here and Now”.

Megan enjoyed her early days in the land of “Woulda, Coulda, Shoulda”. After all, she loved reminiscing on happy times when she and her friends and family were together. However, living in the land of “Woulda, Coulda, Shoulda” had some disadvantages, too. From her house, she could see all of the things that would have been if she had made other choices. She was reminded of the decisions she could have made but didn’t and was forced to reflect upon the people she should have treated differently along the way. Very soon, Megan grew very sad and lonely in the land of “Woulda, Coulda, Shoulda” and decided to move to the land of “Oughta” for a different view.

Living in the land of “Oughta” was great, at first. Megan was a dreamer and a planner and a thinker-ahead. The land of “Oughta” afforded many opportunities to dream about, plan for, and think of the future. However, it was also difficult to live in the land of “Oughta”. For, in the land of “Oughta”, one never knows exactly what will happen even with all of that dreaming, planning, and thinking ahead. In fact, with so many unknowns, the land of “Oughta” became something of a burden to Megan. She didn’t like living her days in anxiety over what might or might not happen. So, she packed her bags and moved to the land of “Here and Now”.

The land of “Here and Now” was a refreshing change of pace! Free from the tyranny of her past and the worries about her future, Megan was able to live every moment as if it was her last. When she was tired, she slept. When she woke up, she rejoiced at the dawn. When she was hungry, she ate. When she was bored, she read or wrote or went for a walk or played a game or did something to help someone. When she was sad, she cried. When she was lonely, she called or visited friends, inviting them all to the land of “Here and Now”.

You are invited to the land of “Here and Now”! Will you accept the invitation?

Peace, joy, and health!
