Now is the time

One of the more famous Biblical quotes, which was the inspiration for a wonderful song by The Byrds (“Turn, Turn, Turn”) is from Ecclesiastes (3:1): “For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven.” Everything…birth, celebrations, setbacks, death…happens in due time, right? Well, today I want to argue that NOW is the time for us to stop accepting what society tells us is beautiful and start listening to what our spirit, mind, and body know to be beautiful.

Last month, I shared with you The Real Woman Creed, from The Real Women Project. One of the most striking lines from that creed is, “I believe that the time has come to let go of old notions and unhealthy attitudes, and I commit to re-examine what I have been told about beauty and dismiss what insults my soul.” The time has come. The time is now.

I was frustrated this weekend when I saw an article on Yahoo! that compared the way two celebrity women looked in the same dress. Both looked dangerously thin and unhealthy to my “reprogrammed” eyes. But the article was about how gorgeous these individuals looked. To some of us, those images reinforce a completely impossible body type and do not point out the possibility that these individuals may be quite unhealthy at those low weights. Again, the time is NOW to reject these notions, to share our thoughts with others, and to embrace what is healthy for our minds, bodies, and spirits.

What will it take for you to let go of outdated notions of beauty and unhealthy attitudes? Will you need help dismissing what society has said (and continues to say) is beautiful?

Peace, joy, and health on your journey.
