Day 9 – The Twelve Days of Thanksgiving

Yesterday I talked about how thankful I am for my family members and the huge role they played in my recovery from B.E.D. Today, I want to thank several of my friends…

Day 9 – I’m thankful for my friends!

Becky – You are my #1 support and best friend! You stuck by me even when the voice of my eating disorder told me to push you away. You kept sending me cards and kept emailing me even when I ignored them and didn’t thank you for them. You are truly a wonderful friend and I am SO BLESSED that you forgave me and allowed me right back into your life when I was ready. Thank you.

Jen W. – My mom encouraged me to get back in touch with you after our adult lives had sent us in separate directions. I’m so glad I reached out to you and that you were willing to meet me that first time in the cafe at Borders. It was hard for me to admit my failures and talk about how my disordered eating had kept me away from you and other friends, but you listened (like the wonderful counselor you are!) and were encouraging. And now we have our regular get-togethers to vent about “counselor stuff”. I so treasure that! Thank you.

Isaac – I know we’re no longer as close as we were when I was first walking away from B.E.D., but I want you to know that I so appreciate how helpful you were to me during that time. I look back at journal entries and see things like, “Isaac suggested that I …” and I smile. You always encouraged me to take it one day at a time and were my daily cheerleader as I was writing my book. Thank you.

Darlene – You were one of my first “high school friends” that I reached out to during my recovery from B.E.D. Somehow, I just knew that you would be warm and welcoming and wouldn’t mind that my life was a mess. Thank you for that! I’m sorry we haven’t been as close lately as we were a few years ago but I hope you know how much I appreciate your friendship.

Paul – Where can I begin? You were the first person I knew who actually practices mindful eating on a daily basis! Seriously…there aren’t many in my circle of friends who smell their food, admire out loud the pretty colors, listen to the sounds it makes, and slowly savor each bite. What an inspiration you are to me as I continue to change my relationship with food. Thank you for continuing to encourage me to take it one day at a time and for reminding me that my beauty is much deeper than what’s reflected in the mirror.

There are so many more of you than I can mention here!

All of my close friends from college and high school who I’ve reconnected with post-B.E.D. and all my new friends from church and various jobs and grad school and all of you, dear readers…you are treasures to me! I thank you for walking this journey with me and for putting up with all my posts on facebook about overcoming disordered eating, improving body image, and self-improvement! 🙂 You’re the best!

With gratitude,

Megan

What I love is hearing how you re-connected with your Friends after you got out of B.E.D. That must have taken great courage and faith, Megan.

Would you ever take a day in your 12 Days of Thanks Giving to pen a thank you to Your Self?

    Lots of love to you.

Interesting idea…to pen a letter of thanks to myself. I haven’t thought of that and will likely do it…maybe as a wrap-up after the 12 days. Thanks for the idea and for your encouragement. I hope this day was a peaceful one for you. 🙂
